Ahh, Sweet Summer Issue – Get Great Exercise Tips for Losing Weight for the Summer!

Natalie explains the best work out routines and what you can do to maximize your exercise efforts.

Natalie’s Tip:

Ahh, summertime! You worked hard to get here, now let’s keep it up. Here are a few tips and exercises that should help you stay on track for losing weight for the summer. First, do not skip meals. Eating regular meals and small snacks throughout the day will keep you from being hungry. Second, make sure you have healthy snacks on-hand at all times. Doing so will keep you out of the fast food lines. Some of my favorite snacks are almonds, apples, whole wheat pretzels and carrot sticks. Third, be sure to drink plenty of water. It is filling and calorie free! My next tip is for when you are running low on energy: have a little bit of caffeine, but not too much, as it can accelerate the heart rate. Consider a 12-oz. cup of coffee or a cup of green tea. Finally, team up with a fitness trainer, friend or family member. It will help keep you from skipping your workouts.

In my May “Tip” I addressed your concerns of why the scale isn’t budging or how you can drop a lot of weight fast. I suggested that you increase the intensity of your workouts and review your eating. Upping the intensity of my workouts is one of my favorite things to do when I want to burn extra calories. Upping the intensity doesn’t mean you have to add more time to your workout. What I enjoy doing is to add step-ups to my weight training routine. Here’s how: take an aerobic step with risers and do a basic step or “march” up and down 20 times on each leg in between weight sets. For more of a challenging exercise routine, perform a “knee up”work out, which involves stepping up and lifting your knee and returning the lifted leg to the ground. Doing this adds a little to the heart rate, turning your workout into an interval training, which in turn burns more calories.
