FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — (October 3, 2011) — This October marks the 25th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the past 25 years, the medical field has made great advances in new treatments and therapies in the fight against cancer. Not only have new discoveries been found in stopping cancer cells from growing, medical science has learned a great deal about the impact diet and exercise have on our health.
Lady of America Franchise Corporation wants to make sure you understand that breast cancer prevention starts with your own health habits, including staying physically active, limiting alcohol consumption and eating right.
Research continues to show that physical activity can reduce the risk of cancer, including colon, prostate, lung and breast. According to the American Cancer Society, most studies find reduced risk in women who perform moderate to vigorous exercise for 45 to 60 minutes five or more days per week. Physical activity helps lower a woman’s risk by lowering estrogen and insulin levels, fighting obesity and boosting the function of immune system cells that attack tumors.
“Nothing you do can guarantee your life will be cancer-free. But if you practice healthy habits and consult your doctor about extra measures you can take, you can reduce your risk,” said Gerry Weber, CEO of Lady of America Franchise Corporation.
It’s never too late to start, no matter your age. Lady of America Franchise Corporation suggests that women build physical activity into their daily routine. To challenge the body and keep from getting bored, vary the routine every six to eight weeks. “I always suggest to our members that they include both resistance training and cardio training in their workouts. I also recommend that they add stretching – yoga or Pilates – at least twice a week,” said Natalie Brabner, Lady of America’s Official Fitness Trainer. “I want women to vary their workouts so that they continuously challenge their body and keep it interesting. The group classes we offer at Lady of America fitness centers definitely will push you and challenge you. Though they are working hard, the ladies are having fun.”
For those who are new to exercise, Brabner suggests taking brisk walks, using free weights and trying a group class. “For those who have been exercising for some time, it’s time to take it to the next level. Instead of walking, try running; add more intensity to your workouts and challenge yourself by doing something you’ve never done before.”
If you are inactive, overweight or have a risk of heart disease or other chronic health problems, Lady of America Franchise Corporation suggests you consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
